This outcome is only likely if we are unable to solve the problem of access to clean energy sufficient to power ubiquitous AI and machine labor. Otherwise, there’s nothing to suggest that the advance of technology won’t continue to both expand capabilities and decrease the cost of production over time.
The resulting collapse of the supply/demand curve of human labor will force a flattening of the distribution of income causing a rebalancing of wealth. All this before, if we’re lucky, a violent revolution against the monied class.
We have to navigate a very dangerous transition to a new paradigm. One that upends conventional systems and social order to prepare us for ever declining scarcity.
I’m not optimistic. But I am hopeful.
