The Death of the American Dream

There’s a scene in the epic movie “Dr. Zhivago”. Upon returning home to his opulent estate in Moscow the title character discovers 12 other families now sharing what he once had all to himself. The chairman of the residence committee, Comrade Kaprugina tells Zhivago, “There was living space for 13 families in this one house.” “Yes,” says Zhivago, “yes, this is a better arrangement, comrades. More just.”

Dr Zhivago’s reaction was entirely pragmatic. He no longer had power over who lived in “his” house and who didn’t. He was intelligent enough to know the paradigm had shifted and with that shift, the rules had changed in what was, historically speaking, the blink of an eye.

If you have the time and connectivity to be reading this, your position probably isn’t much different than Dr Zhivago’s. It’s just a matter of time before your home is taken over by several other families looking for a roof that doesn’t leak. Don’t plan on retaining the master bedroom. You know, the one with the en-suite bathroom and jacuzzi.

Surprised?

It’s understandable. You’ve been responsible. Led a clean life. Worked hard.

So did Dr Zhivago. Sure, his romantic life was a little complicated but…
