It seems to me that memorization as a critical component of problem solving have declined proportionate to the ability of search engines to instantly recall information. Now, the critical element is having a grasp of how to use found knowledge to spur curiosity, research, insight, inspiration and collaboration.
I can (and have) memorized script, music and lyrics to successfully perform demanding roles in musicals. But, ask me to recite the lyrics to the song "Betrayed" (The Producers), from memory a decade or more after playing the role and I'll fail. I can, however use Google and within a second, be able to recite the entire song without error (It's a doozie!)
