Equality of opportunity in this case does not mean saving the industry from eating its own. The main element drivng the entertainment business is the severe gap between the supply of creative artists and the demand for them. This imbalance in partnership with human greed and fear are what creates most of the badness in the business.

Pre-covid, the effective annual unemployment rate for members of the US professional actor's union was about 86%. For the 14% that did work, the median annual income from professional work was about $7,500 USD per year. The metrics are similar in the film industry. Equal opportunity is a good thing. But equal opportunity in an industry that is so starved for work won't correct the imbalance between the number of workers and the demand for them.

The solution is execute strategies that will increase the total number of projects that can employ artists. Decentralization of the development, production and distribution of content is whats needed. Many more smaller projects than few big ones.

Time for a new paradigm.
