As horrible as this was, it's a mistake to ignore conventional non-profit institutions. In the 20 years since you had this experience, student debt has exploded driving the return on investment for many degrees negative. For example, there are over 1000 non profit colleges/universities offering a BFA in theater, acting etc. While the annual effective unemployment rate for professional actors was 86%. For the 14% who did work, median annual earnings were app. $7,500/yr.

The arts in general suffer from an enormous gap between what the market demands (media, plays, etc) and the supply of talent. This is the root cause of most of the problems in the industry and higher education is simply dipping into the well of student ambition to quench their thirst.
